Purchase class materials.   Bring the materials to class on Tuesday;  hardbound 3 ring binder, notebook paper, graph paper, ,40 index cards, 12 colored pencils, 1 blue pen, 1 black pen, 1 pencil, 1 personal pencil sharpener.   Check on your ability to access the online biology textbook.  Use this website (Mr. Pastirik' HomePage) for the textbook's webbsite and access (password) code.  Copy and paste, and be patient.

 

Tuesday we will set up notebook, and Tuesday we will start/complete chapter 1 flash cards.  You will need 40  3x5 flashcards.

Today, we will begin our sciences words of the day (WOD). The science words of the day (WOD) will be completed in class. There is a handout associated with the "Science Word of Day". I will give students one copy of the WOD. If students lose or disfigure the sheet, they are responsible for downloading and completing the work. The WOD are meant to be done in class. Students should not "go ahead", and if a student misses a word (excused absence, etc.), then they are responsible for completing the work in order. We will do two words today. Typically, we only do one to three word(s) of the day (WOD) daily. The entire list of WOD may be found on p.1124-1125. Keep the words in order, make up words missed, and do not go ahead of the class.

We started flashcards for chapter 1 created from the 40 (3x5) index cards brought in to class by students. The vocabulary words are found on p. 24. The flashcards will be completed in pen (blue or black ink), and I will show the format for the cards to students in class. Since this list of vocabulary is large for this initial chapter, we will complete one section of vocabulary a day for three days. Today, we will do section 1.1 vocabulary. There are actually 31 vocabulary words. I usually have students bring in a couple of extra cards in case they make a mistake. Students will receive a grade for completing the flashcards. Students will then use them as a study tool for a quiz over the vocabulary words for the chapter.

Practice Genetics Problems (to be copied and completed)

Genetics problems - While height in humans is controlled by more than one gene, Let's pretend there is a single gene for height in

humans. With single genes, there is the option of being one thing or another, but no "inbetweens". So, with height in humans

one may either be Tall (T) or short (t). The different forms of a gene are called alleles. Generally, alleles occur in

pairs (as in diploid). Alleles are not different genes, but different forms of the same gene. Some alleles are dominant

over the other and they are designated with a capital letter. So, in order for a recessive allele (lower-case letter) to

show (phenotype), it must be homozygous. While the dominant allele may be pure (homozygous) or a hybrid

(heterozygous). How would one show the genotype of a short individual? a tall individual?

1. What genotype would be needed to test whether a phenotypically tall person was homozygous or heterozygous for

tallness? What type of cross is this?

2. Give the genotypic and phenotypic ratios for a cross (breeding) between a heterozygous Tall male and a heterozygous Tall female.

3. Brown eye color is dominant over blue eye color in humans. A heterozygous tall heterozygous brown-eyed female crosses

with a homozygous tall heterozygous brown-eyed male. Since this cross involves two traits (genes), it is called a dihybid cross.

a. Give the genotypes for the parents.

b. Give the gametes (eggs for female, and sperm for males).

c. Create and complete the Punnett square for the cross.

d. Give the genotypic and phenotyic ratios resulting from the cross.

4. A heterozygous tall heterozygous brown-eyed female crosses with a heterozygous tall heterozygous brown-eyed male.

Since this cross involves two traits (genes), it is called a dihybid cross.

Some traits are associated with gender. These traits are called sex-linked or X-linked traits. These traits include color-blindness and hemophilia. A carrier is someone who has the one of the alleles for the trait, but does not exhibit the trait. The difference between men's and women's chromosomes is due to the the sex chromosomes in males. A male's sex chromosomes are actually an X and a Y. The Y is actually a decrepit X. Since it is missing a "leg" of its chromosome (and its genes) this generally creates the disease condition in males at a greater amount than that found in females.

5. A female carrier for hemophilia crosses with a non-hemophiliac father. Give the genotypic and phenotypic ratios resulting from this cross.

6. A (mother) non-hemophiliac x with (father) with hemophilia producing a daughter with hemophilia. What is the genotype of the mother?
